As an English teacher, we always emphasize learning the spelling of a word that a student has trouble pronouncing. Understanding, how each letter sounds is a key component in dissecting a words pronunciation. However, there are exceptions to the rule, as with most rules in the English language.
Some letters change sounds when surrounded by other different letters when speaking. For example lets look at th-. When saying think, three, or thousand. The th- sounds like a strained s sound. But when we say then or than, The th- sounds more like a d.
So when trying to master pronunciation, it is important to learn to distinguish what letters will have a different sound when used in a certain way.
