February takes its name from the Roman month of Februarius, coming from a Latin term meaning "purification." In Catholic tradition, it is the month of purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Romans considered winter to have no months, and February was not added to the calendar until much later, where it was placed last along with January. Under Emperor Julius Caesar, the extra month of intercalaris was removed, and the system of leap years established. While it began as a month of purification, February has come to stand for something much different. For most of us, we are not thinking about calendars in February, but of love.

Today, February is most known for Valentine's day. Also known as Saint Valentine's day, it was instituted in honor of the Christian martyr Valentine, a 3rd-century saint who ministered to persecuted Christians in Rome. When the spirit of courtly love became important in the 14th and 15th centuries, the day came to represent ideals of romantic love. It became a symbol for the "lovebirds" of early spring, and a way in which couples could express their affection by giving one another gifts of flowers, sweets, and cards. In this way, the cold month of February has risen from its humble origins to come to stand for the warmest of human feelings - love.
