Australia's national football sport, known as Australian Rules Football and operated by the Australian Football League (AFL), has been played in other countries for over 100 years. The sport was introduced to Japan in 1910 by an Australian employee of the British embassy.

Since then, leagues have been operating here in Japan, Japan has developed a national team, the Samurais, to play at international tournaments, and teams from Australia have played exhibition matches in the country. The first of these was played between Hawthorn and Carlton in Yokohama, in 1986, and attracted an audience of 25,000 people!

There have even been players born in Japan who have been good enough to trial and play for teams in Australia's top league. Currently, there are 2 players, Michito Owens and Alex Davies, whose mothers are Japanese, playing for elite AFL clubs.
