As Japanese children return to school from Summer break this week or last week, I want to write about the difference in school year start and end dates in different countries.

In Australia, where I come from, and New Zealand, Summer starts in December, so our school year runs from February to December. This means that you finish, for example, 3rd grade in December and start 4th grade in February. It is similar in Brazil, but they have a slightly longer summer break.

In North America, the school year starts in September and finishes in April. This means that they have a really long Summer break! It is similar in Europe, where the school year generally starts at the beginning of September and finishes in June or July.

Asia has the most variance, with Japan (April), China (September), Korea (March), Phillipines and India (both June), and Singapore (January) all beginning the school year at different times!
