While most of the world's population, including Japanese people, celebrate Christmas during the cold winter months, in Australia, it's summer! I'm going to explain some Christmas traditions we have in Australia.

Firstly, because of the nice weather, it's a great chance to get together with extended families outside, rather than being stuck inside. Because of this, many families go to the park, the beach, or simply sit around the backyard in an outdoor setting.

Secondly, the food. Because of the weather, we avoid big, hot fowl meals (such as turkey) most commonly associated with Christmas around the world. Instead, seafood, such as crayfish and prawns (shrimp), is extremely popular, as well as cold salads, ham, and even sausages and hamburgers on the barbecue.

In Australia, Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December. The 26th is called Boxing Day, and it is another huge national holiday. Families pack their Christmas trees and decorations into storage. Stores have major sales to sell the items they didn't sell before Christmas. And Australia's most popular summer sport, cricket, is played between Australia and another team (this year, it will be against England). Cricket games last five days, meaning that the game finishes on the 30th of December.
