Growing up in America, Halloween was always a big deal for us kids, not least because it was an opportunity to get bagful (like huge pillowcase bagfuls) of candy! When I came to Japan, I was surprised to discover that Halloween is almost as big an event here as it is in America, but with a few differences. There is a cultural aspect to Halloween in America that comes from a Celtic tradition of warding off spirits and ghosts and the name itself comes from a Catholic tradition of All Saint's Day, of which the previous day was named All Hallow's Eve. Now, however, the holiday has largely become seperated from any religious belief, rather becoming mainly a commercial holiday, as it is in Japan. One of the main differences between Halloween in America and Japan is carving pumpkins. Many stores sell big orange pumpkins that are easy to carve. In Japan, I haven't seen many of these pumpkins sold in stores, mainly finding the tinier Japanese pumpkins that are eaten rather than carved. Another difference is the large public costume gatherings (such as the one in Shibuya) that are popular in Japan amongst teens and adults but that aren't really seen on the same scale in America. A third and final difference is the tradition of Trick-or-treating, in which kids go around their neighborhood knocking on doors and receiving candy in return. This doesn't really exist in Japan. Aside from these differences, Halloween is a big commercial event in both countries, with shops and stores everywhere decorating and making custom-themed art, as well as the increase in sales of fall themed goods and treats. With all this said, I hope to enjoy my first Halloween in Japan this year and hope you get to see what its like in America someday as well!

アメリカで育った私にとって、ハロウィンは子どもにとってとても大きなイベントでした。特に、大きな袋（枕カバーくらいの大きさの袋）いっぱいにキャンディをもらえるチャンスだったからです！

日本に来てからは、ハロウィンがアメリカと同じくらい大きなイベントになっていることに驚きましたが、いくつかの違いもあると感じました。

アメリカのハロウィンには、もともとケルトの伝統に由来する文化的な側面があり、悪霊や幽霊を追い払うための行事でした。また、ハロウィンという名前自体はカトリックの「諸聖人の日（All Saints’ Day）」に由来し、その前日が「All Hallows’ Eve（万聖節の前夜祭）」と呼ばれていたことに関係しています。

現在では、この祝日は宗教的な意味合いからはほとんど切り離され、アメリカでも日本でも主に商業的なイベントとして定着しています。

アメリカと日本のハロウィンの大きな違いの一つは、**かぼちゃの彫刻（ジャック・オー・ランタン）**です。アメリカでは、彫刻しやすい大きなオレンジ色のかぼちゃが店でたくさん売られていて、それを使って飾りを作るのが定番です。しかし、日本ではそういったかぼちゃはあまり見かけず、代わりに食用の小さめのかぼちゃが多く売られている印象があります。

もう一つの違いは、渋谷などで行われる大規模な仮装イベントです。日本では、ティーンや大人たちの間でこうしたパブリックな仮装が盛んですが、アメリカではこのような規模の仮装イベントはあまり見られません。

三つ目の違いは、トリック・オア・トリートの習慣です。アメリカでは、子どもたちが近所を回って「トリック・オア・トリート！（お菓子をくれなきゃ、いたずらするぞ！）」と言って家々のドアをノックし、お菓子をもらうのが定番ですが、日本ではこの習慣はほとんど見られません。

これらの違いはありますが、ハロウィンは日本でもアメリカでも大きな商業イベントであり、店やショッピングモールでは装飾やハロウィン限定アートがあふれ、秋の味覚やスイーツもたくさん並びます。

そんな中で、私は今年、日本で初めてのハロウィンを楽しむつもりです。そして、いつかあなたにもアメリカのハロウィンを体験してもらえたら嬉しいです！
