This month in our adult classes, we are talking about Music. Today, I wanted to share some music themed idioms that you may hear in conversation.

What is an idiom?

The dictionary definition of an idiom is:
"A group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from those of the individual words."
Meaning, the meaning of the words are changed in the conversation. Let's look at some examples.

1) All that jazz - Used in a list of unpleasant or boring things.
-------(ex: This morning I cleaned the whole house - washing, scrubbing, vacuuming, all that jazz!)
2) Toot your own horn - Brag; emphasize one's own contributions.
-------(ex: We've had a very successful year, and I think we have a right to toot our own horn a little.)
3) Face the music - Dealing with consequences of one' actions.
-------(ex: The children broke the window pane while playing and had to face the music when their parents returned home.)
4) Music to my ears - Good to hear; welcome news.
-------(ex: The news of my promotion was music to my ears.)
5) Ring a bell - When something seems familiar.
-------(ex: The name of the restaurant rings a bell, but I'm not sure I've been there.)
6) Sing a different tune - Change your opinion.
-------(ex: They say they're not worried about money, but once they see how much the new equipment will cost, they'll be singing a different tune.)
