In Australia, New Year’s is very different from New Year’s in Japan. One big reason is the season. While Japan is in winter, Australia is in the middle of summer. This changes how people celebrate.
Summer New Year
December in Australia is hot. Many places are over 30°C. Because of this, people often celebrate outside. Barbecues (BBQs), beach trips, and outdoor parties are very popular. Some families eat seafood, salads, and cold drinks instead of hot meals.
New Year’s Eve
New Year’s Eve (December 31st) is the main event in Australia. Many people meet friends rather than family. Cities like Sydney and Melbourne have very big fireworks shows. Sydney’s fireworks are famous around the world and are watched by millions of people on TV.
People usually count down to midnight, say “Happy New Year!”, hug each other, and drink alcohol. Staying up late is normal, even for young people.
New Year’s Day
New Year’s Day (January 1st) is more relaxed. Many people sleep in or go to the beach to recover from the night before. There are no special traditions like osechi ryōri or visiting shrines. For most Australians, New Year’s Day is just a public holiday.
No Oshōgatsu Culture
In Japan, New Year’s is a family event with strong traditions. In Australia, there is no oshōgatsu culture. People do not clean their houses for New Year, send nengajō, or visit shrines. Christmas is actually more important for family time.
A Casual Celebration
Overall, New Year’s in Australia is casual, social, and fun. It is more about friends, fireworks, and enjoying summer than about tradition. This difference can be surprising for Japanese people, but it also shows how culture and season affect celebrations.
