Recently, I went to Okinawa for a week over the Golden Week holidays. Despite mostly cloudy and rainy weather, I enjoyed how different and interesting the food (such as bitter gourd and sea grapes), architecture, and feel of the place is compared to Shizuoka and other places in mainland Japan.

I was interested to learn different things from World War 2, such as the Japanese forcing students 14-18 years old (both boys and girls) to join the frontline (and losing over half of these children in the fighting) and the aftermath of the war in Okinawa, particularly the long American occupation of the island and the way this cut off Okinawa and its citizens from the central Japanese government at the time. It gave a fascinating insight into what the war did to Okinawa and its people, which I wasn't aware of before visiting the island.
