Hello, my name is Ryn Kaestner (pronounced Rin Kessner). I am originally from the state of Washington, not to be confused with Washington D.C. I grew up in a small town relatively near to the city of Seattle. Seattle is not particularly well known globally, but it is somewhat famous as being home to several important companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing, and, of course, Starbucks. Seattle is also home to some popular sports teams including the Sounders soccer team, the recently established Kraken hockey team, the Seahawks American football team, as well as the Mariners baseball team. Ichiro Suzuki famously originally played for the Mariners when he came to the US.

            Quite aside from the city of Seattle Washington state itself is known for its abundant nature. Washington is home to a varied landscape that offers tall mountains, deep forests, lakes, rivers, arid highlands, a desert and even a temperate rainforest. While much of this landscape is snowbound during the winter months, in summer hiking, camping, swimming, fishing and hunting are very popular.

            I decided to move to Japan after studying abroad in Hachioji during my freshman year of college. Though I was only in Hachioji for ten short weeks I really came to appreciate Japanese culture and society in that time. After graduating from Western Washington University I was accepted into the JET Program and became a junior high school ALT in Minamata city in Kumamoto prefecture. While I grew to love Minamata I eventually decided to move to Hamamatsu to explore new career opportunities.

こんにちは、私の名前はリン・ケストナー（リン・ケスナーと発音します）です。私はワシントン州の出身ですが、ワシントン D.C. と混同しないでください。私はシアトル市に比較的近い小さな町で育ちました。シアトルは世界的にはあまり知られていませんが、アマゾン、マイクロソフト、ボーイング、そしてもちろんスターバックスなどの重要な企業がいくつかあることである程度有名です。シアトルには、サウンダーズ サッカー チーム、最近設立されたクラーケン ホッケー チーム、シーホークス アメリカン フットボール チーム、マリナーズ野球チームなどの人気スポーツ チームの本拠地もあります。イチロー・スズキが渡米した当初はマリナーズでプレーしていたことは有名だ。 シアトル市以外にもワシントン州自体が豊かな自然で知られています。ワシントンには、高い山、深い森、湖、川、乾燥した高地、砂漠、さらには温帯雨林など、変化に富んだ景観が広がっています。冬の間はこの風景の大部分が雪に閉ざされますが、夏にはハイキング、キャンプ、水泳、釣り、狩猟が非常に人気です。 大学1年生の時に八王子への留学を経て、日本への移住を決意しました。私は八王子に 10 週間という短い期間しか滞在しませんでしたが、その間に日本の文化と社会を本当に理解するようになりました。西ワシントン大学を卒業後、JET プログラムに合格し、熊本県水俣市の中学校の ALT になりました。私は水俣が大好きになりましたが、最終的には新しいキャリアの機会を模索するために浜松に移住することに決めました。
