Today I'd like to share an old story that's been around for ages, its the story of Narcissus and Echo.

According to the story, Narcissus was born of a nymph (a kind of woodland spirit) and grew up to be the most beautiful of all the young men in his city. He was admired by all the men and women wherever he went and was constantly receiving proposals of marriage.

One day, as Narcissus was out hunting with his friends, he was seen by another nymph called Echo. Now the goddess Juno had taken away Echo's voice because Echo had angered her by taking her husband's side during an argument between them.

Echo fell in love as soon as she saw Narcissus. She followed him silently through the forest, longing to speak to him but unable to say a single word. Finally, she revealed herself, but Narcissus rejected her. She fled to a lonely cave and there she wasted away from grief and longing until only her voice remained. That voice is the same we hear today in places such as big empty rooms and quiet caves.

Narcissus eventually grew thirsty, and, coming to a pool of water, he bent down to take a drink. However, just as he was going to drink, he saw himself in the water and fell in love with his reflection. Realizing he could never have his love, he burned with passion and melted away, becoming a gold and white flower, which to this day we call Narcissus. It is a flower praised for its beauty by poets all over the world and admired by all who see it, just as Narcissus himself once was.

今日は、とても昔から語りつがれてきたお話を紹介したいと思います。ナルキッソスとエコーの物語です。

このお話によると、ナルキッソスはニンフ（森に住む精霊のような存在）から生まれました。そして成長すると、町の若者の中でいちばん美しいと言われるほどの青年になりました。彼はどこへ行っても男の人にも女の人にもほめたたえられ、結婚の申し込みもたくさん受けていました。

ある日、ナルキッソスが友だちと森で狩りをしていると、エコーというニンフに見つけられました。ところが女神ユーノーは、エコーが夫の味方をして自分を怒らせたため、エコーの声をうばってしまっていました。

エコーはナルキッソスを見ると、すぐに恋に落ちました。彼女は森の中で、ナルキッソスのあとを静かについていきました。話しかけたいと思っても、自分から言葉を言うことができなかったのです。やがてエコーは姿をあらわしましたが、ナルキッソスは彼女を受け入れませんでした。エコーはさびしい洞くつへ逃げこみ、悲しみと恋しさのあまり、だんだんとやせ衰えてしまいました。そしてついには、声だけが残りました。その声こそが、今日でも大きくて空っぽの部屋や静かな洞くつで聞こえる「こだま（エコー）」なのです。

その後、ナルキッソスはのどが渇き、水のたまった池にやってきました。水を飲もうとしてかがみこむと、水の中にうつった自分の姿が見えました。そして彼は、その姿に恋をしてしまったのです。けれどもやがて、それが自分自身だと気づきました。決して手に入れることのできない相手だとわかったとき、ナルキッソスは激しい思いに苦しみ、ついには消えるようにいなくなってしまいました。そしてその場所には、金色と白色の花が咲きました。

その花は今でもナルキッソス（水仙）と呼ばれています。世界中の詩人たちがその美しさをほめたたえ、見る人すべてがその花を美しいと思うのです。ちょうど昔、人々がナルキッソスの美しさをほめたたえたように。
