Discover the UK: A Short History of Wales

Wales has a long and interesting history. The country has been home to different peoples for thousands of years, and its history has helped create the strong Welsh culture we see today.

Long before England became a country, Celtic people lived in Wales. They had their own languages, traditions, and way of life. The Welsh language comes from this Celtic past and is still spoken today.

The Romans arrived in Britain almost 2,000 years ago. They built roads, forts, and towns across Wales, but the Welsh people fought against Roman control.

After the Romans left Britain, Wales was divided into several small kingdoms. During the Middle Ages, Welsh rulers fought to protect their land from English kings. One of the most famous Welsh princes was Llywelyn the Great, who controlled much of Wales in the 13th century.

However, Wales eventually became part of the Kingdom of England. In the 16th century, laws made Wales and England more closely connected. Since then, Wales has remained part of the same political country as England, although it has kept its own culture, language, and national identity.

Wales also became an important centre of industry during the Industrial Revolution. Coal and iron were found in large amounts, especially in South Wales. Mining communities grew quickly, and these industries played an important role in the history of modern Wales.

Today, Wales is a modern country with a strong connection to its past. You can see castles, ancient buildings, and historic towns throughout the country. Welsh language and culture are also an important part of everyday life.

In our next articles, we will discover more about Welsh culture, famous people, and places to visit.
