Do you know the book Gone With the Wind? It's quite famous in the West for it's portrayal of the Civil War and the dynamics between its many characters. The story follows Scarlet O'Hara, daughter of a well-to-do southern plantation owner. She is in love with Ashley but he is going to marry his cousin so they can't be together. Scarlet never stops trying to make him admit his love for her, however. When the North invades the South she is driven from her home and gets involved with a man named Rhett Butler, a southern gentleman with much charm and not a little wit. Rhett loves Scarlet but she at first only shows scorn for him. However, their relationship continues throughout the story amidst the various other events and eventually they get married. Things don't work out and Scarlet finally succeeds in pushing Rhett away. He leaves her once and for all, much to Scarlet's regret, as she realizes suddenly that she loved him all along. In the end, a broken and destitute Scarlet returns to her home and attempts to move forward with hope and perhaps get Rhett to come back to her.

The book was written by Margaret Mitchell who was born and raised in Georgia. Gone With the Wind is the only novel that she published in her lifetime, and in 1937 it won her the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It was later adapted into a movie, which is considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made. It also won an Academy Award for best picture.

やがて北軍が南部へ侵攻すると、彼女は故郷を追われ、レット・バトラーという男性と関わるようになります。レットは魅力と機知に富んだ南部紳士です。レットはスカーレットを愛していますが、当初の彼女は彼に軽蔑しか示しません。しかし、さまざまな出来事が続く中で二人の関係も深まり、やがて結婚します。

ところが結婚生活はうまくいかず、スカーレットはついにレットを完全に遠ざけてしまいます。レットは彼女のもとを去り、二度と戻らない決意をします。そのときになって初めて、スカーレットは自分が本当に愛していたのはレットだったのだと気づき、深く後悔します。

物語の最後で、打ちひしがれ、すべてを失ったスカーレットは故郷へ戻ります。そして希望を持って前へ進みながら、いつかレットを取り戻せるかもしれないと願うのです。

この小説は、Margaret Mitchellによって書かれました。彼女はジョージア州で生まれ育ちました。『Gone with the Wind』は彼女が生涯で出版した唯一の長編小説であり、1937年にはPulitzer Prize for Fictionを受賞しました。

その後、この作品は映画化され、その映画は多くの人々から史上最高の映画の一つとみなされています。また、Academy Awardsで作品賞も受賞しました。
