Independence Day, also known as the "4th of July", just passed in the United States. This day celebrates July 4th, 1776, the day that America declared independence from Britain.

People living in the 13 Colonies at the time felt that they had no power in Britain. They had to pay taxes, but they didn't have a say about taxes set by the British monarchy. This feeling of unfairness brought the famous battle cry "Taxation without Representation."

Now, people celebrate by having a cookout (a BBQ get-together) with friends and family. Some people shoot fireworks or go to parades. It's a lot of fun!
