Tropical storms, such as typhoons in Japan, cyclones in Australia, and hurricanes in America, are named differently by different countries. Japan, as well as some other countries in Asia, have a naming system which assigns typhoons a number (e.g. Typhoon No. 14), which resets every year back to No. 1 for the next typhoon season.

However, in many other countries, these severe tropical storms are given human names. The practice of naming tropical storms began years ago in order to help in the quick identification of storms in warning messages, because names are often far easier to remember than numbers and technical terms. For example, the most famous of these in recent times was Hurricane Katrina (a girl's name) in America in 2005, and in Australia, Cyclone Tracy (also a girl's name) at Christmas in 1974. The use of only female names was changed to include male names in 1978.

If a hurricane or cyclone is significant enough, it can have its name "retired" i.e. never to be used again. Hurricane names are chosen from a list by the World Meteorological Organization, and in 2022, the list includes names such as Idalia, Gaston, Rina, Alex, Estelle, Xavier, and Virgil.
